The Best Beaches in the Andaman Islands

The Best Beaches in the Andaman Islands

There's a reason the Andaman Islands keep appearing on lists of the world's best beaches, year after year, compiled by publications that have seen every coastline on earth. The sand here is genuinely powder-fine. The water moves through more shades of blue and green than seems physically reasonable. And because the islands remain relatively remote — a flight and a ferry from anywhere — the beaches haven't yet been worn down by the kind of overtourism that has dulled so many of the world's famous coastlines.

But "the Andamans have great beaches" undersells the truth, because not all of these beaches are the same. Some are wide, dramatic, postcard-perfect stretches built for a sunset that stops conversations. Others are small, hidden, reef-fringed coves where you might not see another person all morning. Some are built for adventure — snorkelling, jet skiing, sea walking — and others exist purely for quiet contemplation.

This guide takes you through the islands' finest beaches, one by one, and shows you how SeaShell Hotels & Resorts — with properties across Havelock, Neil Island, and Port Blair — puts you within easy reach of nearly all of them.

Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island

If you've seen one photograph of the Andamans, there's a good chance it was taken at Radhanagar. Often referred to simply as Beach No. 7, Radhanagar has been ranked among the finest beaches in Asia and has appeared on global "best beach" lists compiled by Time Magazine and others. The reputation is entirely earned. The sand is exceptionally fine and pale, the water a clean, consistent turquoise, and the beach itself wide enough that even on a busy day, finding your own quiet stretch isn't difficult.

What makes Radhanagar genuinely special is its sunset. The beach faces west, and as the sun drops toward the horizon, the entire sky and sea seem to ignite — deep orange bleeding into rose, then violet, the silhouettes of fishing boats drifting across the colour. Arrive half an hour early, find a spot on the sand or in the tree line at the beach's edge, and simply watch. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful sights in India.

Radhanagar is calm and shallow enough for safe swimming, with lifeguards present during the day, making it an excellent choice for families. There's a forest trail running along the back of the beach through tall Andaman bulletwood trees — a lovely shaded walk if the midday sun gets intense.

Staying nearby: SeaShell Havelock places you within easy reach of Radhanagar, with the resort's own travel desk able to arrange transport to the beach for sunset visits or full days of relaxation.

Elephant Beach, Havelock Island

If Radhanagar is the beach for stillness, Elephant Beach is the beach for movement. Accessible either by a short boat ride or a scenic 30 to 40-minute jungle trek through the forest, Elephant Beach is the Andamans' premier destination for snorkelling, water sports, and underwater adventure.

The coral reef here begins just metres from the shoreline — a shallow, accessible garden of hard and soft corals alive with parrotfish, clownfish, and the occasional sea turtle. Beyond snorkelling, the beach offers jet skiing, banana boat rides, sea walking, and scuba diving for those who want to go deeper. It's the kind of beach where there is always something happening, and the energy is infectious, particularly for families with older children and anyone who wants an active beach day rather than a purely contemplative one.

The jungle trek to reach Elephant Beach is an experience in itself — a walk through dense tropical forest, past towering trees and the calls of unfamiliar birds, that turns the arrival at the beach into something closer to a discovery than a simple commute.

Staying nearby: SeaShell Havelock's in-house scuba diving centre and activity desk can arrange snorkelling trips and water sport bookings to Elephant Beach directly, making this one of the easiest beach excursions of your stay.

Kalapathar Beach, Havelock Island

While Radhanagar claims the sunset, Kalapathar Beach is famous for the opposite end of the day. Named for the striking black volcanic rocks that punctuate the pale sand, Kalapathar offers a quieter, more contemplative beach experience than its more famous neighbours — fewer crowds, a more rugged natural beauty, and a sunrise that, for those willing to wake early, rivals anything else in the islands.

The contrast between the black rocks, the white sand, and the turquoise water makes Kalapathar one of the most photogenic beaches in the Andamans, and its relative quiet makes it an excellent spot for a peaceful morning walk or a few hours of reading with the sound of waves as the only soundtrack.

Vijaynagar Beach, Havelock Island

Vijaynagar Beach, also known as Beach No. 5, is a long, palm-lined stretch of shallow water that offers something the more famous Havelock beaches sometimes lack: genuine solitude. The shallow waters here are ideal for swimming and even casual surfing on the right day, and the beach's length means that even when other parts of Havelock are busy, Vijaynagar tends to remain calm and uncrowded.

This is the beach for honeymooners and travellers who want long, unhurried walks along the waterline, with little more company than the coconut palms swaying overhead.

Bharatpur Beach, Neil Island

Set near the jetty on Neil Island, Bharatpur Beach is the most accessible and arguably the most versatile beach on the island — calm, shallow, sheltered waters that make it ideal for families with children, alongside a vibrant reef just offshore that rewards snorkellers with colourful coral and reef fish. Jet skiing and other water sports are also available here, giving Bharatpur a similar energy to Havelock's Elephant Beach but on a smaller, more relaxed scale.

The sunrise at Bharatpur, with the calm water reflecting the early light, is a quietly beautiful start to any day on Neil Island.

Staying nearby: SeaShell Neil and SeaShell Samssara Neil are both a short distance from Bharatpur, making it one of the easiest beaches in the entire archipelago to enjoy spontaneously, without planning a whole day around the trip.

Laxmanpur Beach, Neil Island

Laxmanpur Beach is Neil Island's answer to Radhanagar — a wide, beautiful stretch facing west, famous for sunsets that paint the sky in deep, saturated colour. But Laxmanpur has something else that makes it entirely unique in the Andamans: the Natural Bridge, a dramatic coral rock formation carved by centuries of tidal erosion into the shape of a bridge arching over the water.

The Natural Bridge is best visited at low tide, when the formation is fully exposed and the surrounding rock pools reveal small crabs, sea anemones, and starfish hidden in the shallow water. The walk out to the bridge across the exposed reef flat, with the tide pools glittering around your feet, is one of the more memorable short excursions in the islands.

Staying nearby: SeaShell Samssara Neil sits directly on Lakshmanpur Beach, putting the resort's guests within walking distance of both the sunset and the Natural Bridge — arguably the single best beach location of any SeaShell property in the archipelago.

Sitapur Beach, Neil Island

On the opposite, eastern side of Neil Island sits Sitapur Beach — often called Neil Island's sunrise beach, and considered by many seasoned Andaman travellers to be the finest sunrise viewpoint anywhere in the archipelago. The beach is backed by black rocks and dense tropical forest, with limestone formations and tide pools that make for excellent early morning photography and quiet, crowd-free exploration.

There is a stillness to Sitapur at dawn that is hard to put into words — the first light catching the water, the rock formations throwing long shadows, and almost nobody else around. It is the kind of place that rewards an early alarm clock with one of the quietest, most beautiful hours of an entire Andaman holiday.

Corbyn's Cove, Port Blair

For travellers who don't want to wait until they reach Havelock or Neil Island to put their feet in the sand, Corbyn's Cove offers a lovely coconut-palm-lined beach just a short drive from Port Blair. It's not the dramatic, postcard-perfect beach that Havelock and Neil Island offer, but it's a genuinely pleasant spot for a sunset walk, a quick swim, jet skiing, or a boat ride out to nearby Snake Island — and a good way to ease into island life on your first day before heading further afield.

Staying nearby: SeaShell Port Blair and SeaShell Coral Cove are both well positioned for an easy visit to Corbyn's Cove, particularly on arrival day or before a return flight.

Wandoor Beach and Jolly Buoy Island

Near Port Blair, Wandoor Beach serves as the gateway to the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, home to some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Andamans. From Wandoor, boats depart to Jolly Buoy Island (seasonally alternating with Red Skin Island to allow the reef to recover), where the snorkelling is considered among the finest near Port Blair. The waters here are calm, clear, and strictly protected, with motorised water sports banned to preserve the ecosystem — making it a destination for travellers who want their beach day paired with a genuine sense of conservation and quiet.

Chidiya Tapu, Port Blair

Chidiya Tapu, whose name translates beautifully to "Bird Island," sits at the southernmost tip of South Andaman, roughly 25 kilometres from Port Blair. Surrounded by dense forest alive with birdlife, the beach here is known for spectacular sunsets and a wilder, less manicured beauty than the resort beaches further north. It's a wonderful half-day excursion for nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers looking for something beyond the standard beach experience.

Choosing Your Beach Itinerary

With so many extraordinary beaches spread across three islands, the question for most travellers isn't which beach to see, but how to see as many as possible without exhausting the holiday in transit. This is where SeaShell's multi-property presence becomes genuinely useful.

A well-paced Andaman beach itinerary might begin in Port Blair with an easy visit to Corbyn's Cove or a day trip to Wandoor and Jolly Buoy, before the ferry to Havelock Island, where two or three nights at SeaShell Havelock put Radhanagar, Elephant Beach, Kalapathar, and Vijaynagar all within a short transfer. From there, a final leg to Neil Island and a stay at SeaShell Neil or SeaShell Samssara Neil delivers Bharatpur, Laxmanpur, and Sitapur — three beaches with three completely different characters, all within walking or cycling distance of the resort.

This is, in many ways, the ideal way to experience the Andaman Islands: not rushing between beaches on day trips from a single base, but moving slowly through the islands themselves, with each stop offering its own stretch of sand, its own sunset, and its own reason to linger a little longer than planned.

Best Time to Visit the Beaches

The ideal season for beach-hopping in the Andamans is November to May, when the seas are calm, the skies are clear, and the visibility for snorkelling and swimming is at its best. December through February offers the most pleasant temperatures, while March to May brings warmer days and noticeably thinner crowds at the more popular beaches like Radhanagar and Elephant Beach.

For travellers seeking a quieter, more affordable beach holiday, the monsoon months (June to September) transform the islands into a lush, green landscape with dramatically empty beaches — and SeaShell's current off-season offers make this an increasingly popular time to visit.

Stay with SeaShell

The Andaman Islands' beaches are, individually, some of the finest in the world. Strung together across Havelock, Neil Island, and Port Blair, they become something even more remarkable — a journey through nearly every register of tropical beauty, from dramatic sunset beaches to hidden sunrise coves, from adventure-packed reef systems to silent, untouched stretches of sand.

SeaShell's six properties place you, at every stage of that journey, within easy reach of the very best the islands have to offer — with the comfort, hospitality, and local expertise to make getting there as enjoyable as the beach itself.
